Ayurveda
Ayurveda is an ancient holistic system of Indian medicine that originated thousands of years ago. It is a preventative lifestyle choice; that does not mean to say however that cures are not prescribed. One can find reference of Ayurveda in the ancient Hindu texts, the 'Vedas'.
The name comes from the combination of two Sanskrit words 'Ayu' - life and 'Veda' - knowledge of. The literal meaning of Ayurveda is 'knowledge about life'. According to the ancient Ayurvedic scholar Charaka, 'ayu' comprises of four essential parts - the mind, the body, the senses and the soul.
The basic principle of Ayurveda deals with understanding and balancing the coordination of the mind, body, soul and senses. Ayurveda purports that the body is lead not just by the mind, but by the soul as well. A healthy body therefore requires a balance between body, mind and soul. Illnesses and ailments are caused by an imbalance.
